A small apartment kitchen is the hardest brief we do. Counterintuitive, but true. In a 220m2 house you can hide a bad decision behind sheer floor area. In a 6m2 corner of a Wynyard Quarter one-bedder, every millimetre is on display and every wrong call costs you something you can't get back. The fridge that's 20mm too deep. The drawer that fouls the oven door. The 600mm dishwasher you wedged in where a 450mm slimline would have given you a useful cabinet. There's no slack.
Two ways a small kitchen runs

Start with the layout, not the cabinets
Every small kitchen lives or dies on its layout, and in apartments you usually have two sensible options: the single-wall (a straight run along one wall) or the galley (two parallel runs with a corridor between). Forget the L-shape and U-shape for anything under about 8m2 — they eat a corner you can't afford and the second leg ends up too short to be useful. Islands are a fantasy in this space; if someone's drawn one into a 7m2 plan, it's a peninsula at best and a trip hazard at worst.
The single-wall is the workhorse of Auckland apartment design. Sink, hob, fridge in a line, usually 2.4 to 3.6 metres of run. It opens straight onto the living space, which is why developers love it in open-plan one-bedders — it reads as part of the room, not a separate kitchen. The trade-off is bench space. With three appliances on one wall you're fighting for landing area either side of the hob and sink, and that's where the design has to be tight. We'll often push the fridge to one end and gain a continuous stretch of bench in the middle.
The galley is more efficient if you've got the width — minimum 900mm clear between the faces, 1000mm if a dishwasher or oven door has to open into it, and 1100mm-plus if it's a shared household. Below 900mm two people can't pass and a single open drawer blocks the corridor. Galleys give you twice the bench and twice the storage of a single-wall in the same length, which is why they show up in two-bedroom apartments and the better terraced-housing plans. The catch is they need a through-route or a dead end with a window — a galley that's also the only path to the bedroom becomes a bottleneck at 7am.
The work triangle still applies — it's just shorter
The old work-triangle rule (sink, hob, fridge forming a path of roughly 3.6 to 6.6 metres total) was written for big kitchens, but the logic holds in miniature. In a single-wall it collapses into a work line, and the order along that line is what makes it usable: you want the fridge and sink close so you can unpack and prep, and a stretch of clear bench between the sink and the hob for the actual cooking. Put the hob hard against the fridge and you've got nowhere to land a hot pan.
In a galley, split the functions across the two runs — wet on one side (sink, dishwasher, prep), dry and hot on the other (fridge, hob, oven). That keeps you pivoting rather than walking, and it keeps the splashback behind the hob clear of the sink's water. Get this right and a 7m2 kitchen cooks like one twice the size. Get it wrong and the owner spends ten years sidestepping their own dishwasher door.
Integrated appliances: where they earn their keep
Integration means the appliance disappears behind a cabinet door or sits flush under the bench — integrated fridge, integrated dishwasher, the hob dropped into the benchtop, the rangehood hidden in the cabinetry above. In a small space the payoff is real: fewer visual breaks, an uninterrupted benchtop line, and a kitchen that reads as joinery rather than a wall of white goods. In an open-plan one-bedder where the kitchen is three metres from the sofa, that calm is worth paying for.
But integration costs money and flexibility. An integrated fridge is dearer than a freestanding one and usually smaller inside for the same external size, because the cabinet and door panel steal volume. The opening is fixed, so the next fridge has to fit the same hole — fine for an owner who'll keep it ten years, a headache for a landlord whose appliance fails out of warranty and can't find the same model. Slimline and apartment-sized units
The appliance market has caught up with apartment living. A 450mm slimline dishwasher does a one or two-person household fine and gives you back 150mm of cabinet. Single ovens, 600mm or 450mm, beat the double every time in this space. Induction in a 600mm or even 300mm domino format frees the bench and is safer in a small room with a child than gas or radiant. Combination microwave-ovens at eye level remove a whole appliance from the bench. Spec the appliances first, then we build the cabinetry around them — never the other way round.
Storage is vertical, and it's in the drawers
When floor area is fixed, the only direction left is up. Take the cabinets to the ceiling. That top 400mm above standard wall units is usually wasted in a small apartment, and it's exactly where the slow-cooker, the platters and the Christmas gear should live. Yes, you need a step-stool. Yes, it's worth it. A full-height pantry or broom cupboard at the end of a run does more for a small kitchen than any clever gadget.
Then swap doors for drawers wherever you can. A bank of three deep drawers holds more usable volume than a same-width cupboard with a single shelf, and you can see and reach everything without crawling in. Pot drawers under the hob, a wide pan drawer, cutlery and utensil drawers up top. Making a small kitchen feel bigger
Perception does heavy lifting in a small space. Light, continuous surfaces push the walls back; busy, dark, broken-up ones close them in. Run the benchtop in one material with as few joins as possible. Keep the splashback simple — a single slab or a quiet tile, not a feature. Handleless or slimline-handle doors reduce visual clutter and stop snagging in a tight corridor. A light melteca or 2-pac in a soft neutral will always feel roomier than a dark timber, even though the cube of space is identical.
Lighting finishes the job. Under-cabinet LED strips light the bench without casting your own shadow over the chopping board, and they make a small kitchen feel considered rather than cramped. Say a developer's putting up 38 one-bedroom apartments off Nelson Street, build-to-rent, hold-and-lease. The architect's given each kitchen a single-wall run of 2.7 metres against the party wall, open to a combined living-dining. The brief to us is simple: same kitchen 38 times, durable, fast to install, and it has to look sharp in the letting photos because that's what fills the building.
Here's the spec we'd land on. Apartments don't breathe like standalone houses. Most are tightly sealed, often with restrictions on what you can duct through the facade or roof, so rangehood choice gets constrained fast. Where small-kitchen budgets actually go
People assume a small kitchen is a cheap kitchen. Sometimes. The cabinet carcass cost scales with the number of cabinets, so fewer cabinets does mean less. But the appliances don't shrink in price — a good integrated dishwasher costs the same in a 6m2 kitchen as a 16m2 one — and apartment-sized or integrated appliances can actually cost more than their full-size freestanding cousins.
