Why the corner is the hardest cabinet in the kitchen
A base cabinet carcass runs 560-580mm deep, so you have nearer 540mm of usable depth once the back panel is in. When two of them meet at a corner, the cabinet that runs into the join has a void behind the neighbouring run — a pocket of space roughly 600mm deep by 600mm wide that sits behind a fixed panel or a door. You can build a cabinet over that void, but reaching into it is the problem. Your arm is about 600mm long, the opening is small, and the back corner is in the dark.

Throw hardware at it and you reclaim the space, but you're paying for German swing gear and you've added moving parts that can wear or rack out of alignment. The lazy susan: the old reliable
A lazy susan is a rotating shelf — usually two tiers — mounted on a central spindle inside the corner cabinet. You spin it, the back comes to the front. It's been around forever because it works and it's cheap. The two common types are the full-round (used with a bi-fold door on a true corner cabinet) and the kidney or D-shaped (used where one door folds away).
What it's good at: bringing the back of the cabinet to you with a flick. For pots, pans, appliances and pantry tins, it's genuinely useful and you'll use it daily. What it's not good at: it never uses the full cabinet. There's always a wedge of space between the round shelf and the square cabinet corners that you can't get at, and tall items can foul the spin. Cheap plastic units sag and the bearings get gritty. We fit a decent metal-framed carousel as standard because the bargain ones are a callback waiting to happen.
The magic corner: best access, most hardware
The magic corner — sometimes called a swing-out or pull-out corner — is the premium access solution. You open the single door on the front run and a set of wire or solid-base shelves swings out with it; then a second set glides forward from the blind void behind. Buy cheap copies and the runners bind, the shelves rack, and you'll be back tightening it within the year. That deep back pocket is a black hole — you physically can't reach it without lying half-inside the cabinet. In practice people store the slow cooker and the stuff they touch twice a year back there, and forget it exists. You're paying to build a cabinet you can only really use the front third of.
You can rescue it with blind-corner pull-out hardware — articulated wire baskets that drag the rear shelves out through the opening. That lifts access close to magic-corner levels and costs less than a full swing-out, so it's a sensible middle ground. But a bare static blind corner, with nothing in it, is the option that quietly throws away the most cubic metres of cabinet in the whole kitchen.
The diagonal corner: eats floor space, gives you one big usable box
A diagonal (or angled) corner cabinet cuts across the ninety-degree join at forty-five degrees, presenting a single wide door straight at you. Instead of two runs meeting in a hard corner, you get one big cabinet facing into the room. The whole interior is reachable through one generous opening — no blind pocket, no carousel needed, though you can still drop a lazy susan inside for the very back.
What you're trading is bench and floor space. A diagonal corner pushes the benchtop out into the room and chews up more of the corner footprint than any other option, so it's a poor fit for a tight galley or a small townhouse kitchen where every millimetre of bench counts. But in a bigger kitchen it earns its keep. The diagonal corner is the natural home for a corner sink, or it makes a tidy housing for a tall appliance or a built-in bin.
