Most of what gets sold as a "sustainable kitchen" in New Zealand is a colour swatch and a feeling. Someone tells you the doors are eco, the board is low-emission, the finish is water-based, and you nod because it sounds right. Then nobody can produce a single document to back any of it. We build and install kitchens out of our own workshop in East Tamaki, ten-plus a week, and the gap between what people say about materials and what's actually in the panel is the widest it's ever been.

A claim you can't verify is a feeling

This is the practical version. What "low-VOC" actually means in a kitchen

VOC stands for volatile organic compound — the stuff that evaporates off materials at room temperature and gives a new fit-out that chemical smell. In a kitchen the main sources are the adhesives in the board, the formaldehyde-based resins that hold MDF and particleboard together, and the coatings on the doors and panels. People fixate on paint, but the paint is a thin skin. The board is the mass. A typical kitchen has more square metres of MDF, particleboard and laminate than any other room in the house, so that's where the emissions live.

Formaldehyde gets called out separately because it's the one with the clearest health guidance and the clearest grading system. Board is rated by how much formaldehyde it gives off: E0 is the lowest mainstream grade, E1 is the next step up and the long-standing standard for indoor furniture, and anything looser than E1 has no place in a home kitchen. Super-E0 exists too and is effectively near zero. When a supplier says "low-VOC board," the only answer that means anything is the grade. If they can't tell you E0 or E1, they don't know what they're selling you.

Off-gassing is highest when material is brand new and tapers over weeks. That's why a freshly installed kitchen smells for a few days. Boards: where most of the emissions actually sit

The carcass — the boxes behind the doors — is where the volume of material is, and it's almost always particleboard (chipboard) or MDF with a melamine or melteca face. Here's the part people miss: a melamine-faced or melteca-faced board is sealed on both faces and the edges are banded. That facing acts as a barrier. A quality E0 melamine board is one of the lowest-emission, most stable, most durable carcass materials you can put in a kitchen, full stop. It's not a compromise you accept to be green — it's just good building.

MDF, particleboard and moisture-resistant grades

For painted (2-pac) doors you want MDF because it routs and finishes cleanly. For carcasses, particleboard is standard and fine. In wet zones — under the sink, the kick, anywhere near the dishwasher — you want a moisture-resistant (MR) grade, usually identified by a green or sometimes pink core. MR board isn't about emissions, it's about not turning to Weet-Bix when a connection leaks, which is the most common cause of a carcass failure we see on callbacks. Sustainable and durable are the same conversation here: board that swells and gets replaced in five years is the least green outcome there is.

FSC-certified and recycled-content board

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification means the timber fibre is traced back to responsibly managed forests through a chain of custody. It's a genuine thing, and a lot of the board sold in NZ through the main suppliers is available FSC-certified — sometimes it's the default line. Recycled-content board (made with a high percentage of post-industrial wood fibre) is also real and increasingly common. The catch with both: the certification only counts if it's specified and recorded. FSC board and non-FSC board look identical in the finished kitchen. If it's not named on your quote or order, you have no way to prove what you got, and neither does the manufacturer six months later.

Finishes: 2-pac, melamine and timber on the VOC question

Finishes split into two camps. Sealed-in finishes, where the surface comes pre-laminated and there's no wet coating applied — that's melteca, melamine and laminate. And applied finishes, where a coating is sprayed and cured — that's 2-pac lacquer and timber oils or lacquers. The emission profiles are completely different and you should treat them differently.

2-pac (two-pack) lacquer

2-pac is the premium painted finish — the dead-flat or satin colour you see on high-end slab and shaker doors. It's a two-component system, sprayed and cured in a booth. Solvent-based 2-pac systems are higher-VOC during application, which is exactly why it's sprayed in our workshop with proper extraction and not on your site. By the time the doors are installed, they're fully cured and the off-gassing is largely done. The newer water-based and high-solids 2-pac systems have meaningfully lower VOC content, and if low emissions matter to you, that's the specific thing to ask for: a water-based or low-VOC 2-pac system, with the product data sheet (the SDS or TDS) to show it. Melteca, melamine and laminate

Because these are factory-pressed and sealed, there's no wet coating curing in your house. The only emission source is the board underneath and the edge adhesive, both of which are well controlled in a quality E0 product. Timber

Solid and veneered timber is naturally low-emission in the timber itself; the variable is the glue in the veneer or the laminating, and the finish on top. A timber kitchen finished with a low-VOC water-based lacquer or a natural hardwax oil is about as clean as it gets, and it's repairable — you can sand and re-oil a timber surface in twenty years instead of skip-binning it. Pair FSC timber with a low-VOC finish and you've got a spec that's genuinely sustainable on both fronts, not just on the brochure.

Benchtops and splashbacks: the sustainability nuances

Benchtops carry their own version of this. Laminate benchtops sit on an MDF or particleboard core — same E0/E1 question applies to that core, and the laminate surface seals it. Engineered stone is largely quartz in a resin binder; it's extremely durable, which is the green argument for it (it outlasts almost everything), but be aware the dry-cutting of engineered stone is a serious silica-dust hazard, which is why it should be wet-cut and fabricated by a proper benchtop shop, never knocked about on your site. Natural stone has no resin and no off-gassing, and lasts effectively forever, but it's quarried and shipped, so its footprint is in the transport and extraction rather than emissions in your home.

There's a growing line of recycled-glass and recycled-content surfaces too, and some genuinely good ones, but check durability claims against real warranty terms before you pay a premium — some are softer or more porous than they look. Durability is the sustainability story nobody sells you

Here's the bit the eco-marketing skips, because there's no premium product to sell on the back of it. The greenest kitchen is the one you don't replace. Every kitchen torn out at year eight because the carcasses swelled, the hinges failed, or the laminate delaminated is a full set of materials into landfill and a full set of new materials made to replace them. No amount of recycled fibre in the chipboard offsets that.

So durability spec is sustainability spec. Moisture-resistant board in wet zones. Quality hinges and runners with real cycle ratings — the difference between a drawer rated for 80,000 cycles and a cheap one shows up as a callback at year three. Edge banding that's properly heat-bonded, not peeling. Adjustable, serviceable hardware so a worn part gets swapped instead of the whole unit binned. How to spot greenwash on a kitchen quote

Greenwash in this trade is rarely an outright lie. It's vagueness doing the work. "Eco board," "low-VOC throughout," "sustainably sourced" - none of those are specs, they're adjectives. The test is simple: can the claim be put on the order and documented? If yes, it's real. If it evaporates the moment you ask for the grade, the certificate or the data sheet, it was never there.

  • "Low-VOC" with no E-grade named — ask E0 or E1, get it in writing.
  • "FSC" or "sustainable timber" with no chain-of-custody code or supplier line on the quote — a claim it can't back.
  • "Water-based finish" with no product name or TDS/SDS — the data sheet exists for every real coating; ask for it.
  • "Recycled content" with no percentage and no product — a number you can't verify is a feeling.
  • A green premium with no corresponding spec change — if the material is identical, you're paying for the word, not the kitchen.

What to actually ask for — the NZ checklist

Strip it back to the questions that produce documents. Get these on the quote or the order, and you've got a sustainable kitchen you can prove rather than one you hope is true.

  • Carcass board grade: E0 or E1, MR grade in wet zones — named on the order.
  • FSC chain-of-custody on the board and any timber — with the certificate or supplier line referenced.
  • Finish system: for 2-pac, ask for water-based or low-VOC with the TDS/SDS attached; for sealed finishes, confirm E0 substrate.
  • Recycled content: percentage and product, or don't pay extra for the word.
  • Hardware cycle ratings on hinges and runners — the durability that stops early replacement.
  • Off-gassing window: confirm sprayed doors arrive fully cured, and plan to ventilate the first week.

Frequently asked questions

Is a melamine or melteca kitchen really low-VOC, or is solid timber better?

Both can be excellent. A melteca or melamine kitchen on E0 board is sealed on both faces, so emissions are very low and it's extremely durable — it's one of the best low-fuss choices going. Solid timber is naturally low-emission too, but the variable is the glue and the finish on top, so pair FSC timber with a low-VOC water-based lacquer or hardwax oil. Don't assume timber is automatically cleaner; the finish decides it.

What's the difference between E0 and E1 board?

They're formaldehyde emission grades. E0 is lower-emission than E1, and E1 has been the standard for indoor furniture board for years. For a home kitchen you want E0 or E1 - never anything looser. Super-E0 exists and is near zero if you want the lowest available. The key move is getting the grade named on your order, because the boards look identical once built.

Does 2-pac lacquer make a kitchen high-VOC?

During spraying, solvent-based 2-pac is higher-VOC — which is why it's sprayed in our workshop with extraction, not on your site. By the time the doors are installed they're cured and the off-gassing is largely done. Is FSC-certified board actually worth asking for?

Yes, and it usually costs little or nothing extra because much of the board through NZ's main suppliers is available FSC-certified. The only thing that makes it real is specifying it on the order and recording the chain of custody, because certified and non-certified board look the same in the finished kitchen. An unrecorded FSC claim is unprovable.

How long does a new kitchen off-gas, and what helps?

Emissions are highest when materials are brand new and taper over a few weeks. Ventilate well for the first week or two and run a ducted rangehood that vents outside. Choosing E0 board and sealed or low-VOC finishes lowers both the peak and the baseline you settle to.

Are recycled-content benchtops and surfaces a good idea?
