Strip away the look for a second. A splashback has one structural job and one practical job. The structural job is to protect the wall lining — usually GIB — from water and heat so the lining doesn't swell, mould or scorch. Tile: cheapest to buy, dearest to own
Tile is where most people start because the material is cheap and the range is endless — subway, herringbone, large-format porcelain, handmade Moroccan, you name it. For a character villa in Grey Lynn or a Pt Chev bungalow where you want texture and a bit of soul, nothing else looks quite like real tile. That's the genuine case for it.
The catch is grout. Every grout line is a seam that holds grease, and behind a cooktop that grease goes sticky and dark within a year. You can specify epoxy grout, which is far more stain-resistant than standard cement grout and worth every cent in a splashback — but it's fiddlier to lay and adds labour. Tiling is also a separate trade and a separate day on site: tile, then grout, then silicone, then it has to cure. On a tight build programme that's two or three days you didn't have. Glass: the easy-clean modern pick
Toughened back-painted glass is a single sheet, no joins, no grout. You wipe it and you're done. It comes in any colour you want — the paint goes on the back, so the surface is dead flat and glossy. For a clean modern kitchen, especially behind a cooktop, it's hard to beat on practicality. It also bounces light around, which helps a darker galley feel less boxy.
Two things to know. First, glass is templated and toughened off-site, so it can't be cut or adjusted once it's made — every powerpoint, every tap hole has to be exact at template stage. That's a measure you don't want a builder eyeballing; it wants a proper site measure after the cabinets and bench are in. Second, the colour reads differently once it's on the wall and lit — a white can come up cooler, a grey deeper. Stone slab: seamless, premium, the showpiece
This is the high end. You run the same engineered or natural stone as your benchtop up the wall as a slab — often book-matched so the veining flows from bench to splashback in one continuous sweep. There's no transition, no shadow line, no grout. It's the cleanest look there is and it cleans like the benchtop because it is the benchtop. You pay for it. It's the most expensive option by material and by labour — you're fabricating and craning more slab, with cut-outs for powerpoints and sometimes the rangehood. Full slab vs a stone upstand
There's a middle ground people forget: a stone upstand. Instead of running stone the full 600mm to the overheads, you run a short 100–150mm lip of the same stone up off the benchtop, then finish the rest of the wall in paint or tile above. You get the seamless, water-tight join at the bench — where 90% of the splash actually lands — for a fraction of a full slab. Laminate and stainless: the workhorses
Laminate splashbacks come two ways. A postformed sheet — the same melamine-faced board as a budget benchtop, run up the wall — or a simple upstand off a laminate benchtop. The weakness is the joins and edges: water that sits at a poorly sealed join will eventually swell the MDF core. In a residential kitchen it gives an industrial, pro-kitchen look and wipes clean — the only downside is it shows every fingerprint and smear, so it's busier to keep looking sharp than glass. The rules behind a cooktop
This is the part that's not preference — it's compliance, and it's where DIY splashbacks get people in trouble. Behind a cooktop you're dealing with heat, and the Building Code's fire provisions (acceptable solution C/AS1, plus AS/NZS 5601.1 for gas) and the manufacturer's installation spec set minimum clearances between the cooktop and combustible surfaces. The appliance spec is the law you actually follow. Every cooktop ships with a minimum clearance to side walls, to overhead rangehoods, and to the splashback behind. Gas has stricter clearances than induction because of the open flame. The rangehood height above the cooktop is specified too — get it wrong and the hood doesn't extract properly, or worse, sits too low.
