It arrives in quote requests every week, usually attached to a clear description and sometimes a picture, and to the person sending it, it reads like enough. To the person quoting, it is fog. Somewhere inside that approx sits a kitchen, and the quoter's job is to guess which one without going broke being wrong.

That guess has exactly three shapes, and understanding them explains most of the strange quotes you have ever received: the suspiciously round one, the surprisingly high one, and the range so wide it answered nothing. Services earn their place on that list because moving water or waste costs real money and staying put costs nearly none. A quoter who can see the sink is not moving prices a different job from one who has to allow for the possibility that it might.
