Somewhere in Auckland tonight a G-clamp is achieving nothing. It is wound down hard over a timber block and a folded towel, squeezing a swollen benchtop edge that someone hopes will be flat by morning. It will not be flat by morning. The clamp will come off, the bump will still be there, and the owner will conclude the clamp needed to be bigger.

The clamp is innocent. Once the particleboard core of a laminate top has swollen, no amount of pressure, heat or optimism puts it back, and knowing why saves you a weekend of failed experiments. What is left is a decision with three honest branches: stabilise the damage and live with the bump, replace the damaged section at a join, or replace the top. This piece walks all three, in order of cost.

Why swollen particleboard never goes back down

A laminate benchtop is a thin, genuinely waterproof laminate skin glued over a particleboard core. The core is wood chip and resin pressed flat under enormous factory pressure, and that compression is stored like a spring. Water releases it. The chips swell, the resin bonds between them break, and the board rises a few millimetres proud and holds there, because the broken bonds cannot re-form when the water leaves.

Drying is still the first job, since wet board keeps swelling and grows mould. Just be clear about what drying buys you: it stops the damage, it does not reverse a millimetre of it. Anyone promising to iron, clamp or inject a swollen edge flat is selling you the G-clamp night all over again.

Where the water actually got in

Find the entry point before any repair, or the repair joins the list of things that swelled. There are three usual doors. First is the sink cut-out, where the hole for the bowl leaves raw core sealed only by the silicone under the sink rim; when that bead perishes, every splash wicks straight into the board. Second is the join, where two top sections meet at an L corner and two raw edges rely on a factory seal and a tight fit. Third is the front edge at the dishwasher, cooked by steam every cycle until the edge strip glue lets go.

Run a dry hand under the front edge and along the join, then lift the trap cover or pull the sink-base kick and check underneath with a torch. A perished rim seal shows as a dark shadow line around the sink. A leaking join shows as swelling in a stripe either side of the join line. The stabilise repair, step by step

This is the right path when the bump is modest, the top is otherwise sound, and the kitchen has years left. The goal is a sealed, stable, slightly imperfect top rather than a perfect one.

  • Stop the water. Re-silicone the sink rim, fix the drip, or change the dishwasher-steam habit. Nothing else matters until this is done.
  • Dry it fully. Give the area several days with cupboard doors open and a fan if you have one. Particleboard reads dry on the surface long before the core is dry.
  • Trim back what is loose. Flaked chips and crumbling material get pared away with a chisel; sound swollen board stays.
  • Seal the exposed core. Two coats of a solvent-based sealer or varnish, worked into the raw board until it stops soaking in. A thin coat of contact adhesive also works as a moisture barrier.
  • Re-edge. Iron-on tape will not follow a swollen profile, so glue a laminate strip or 45 mm melamine edging over the sealed edge with contact adhesive, joined touch-dry and rolled hard.

The result is a tidy edge with a slight rise you can find with your fingers. In a rental or a kitchen with a five-year horizon, that is usually the right amount of repair.

When you can replace one section alone

Laminate tops are made in sections that meet at joins, usually at the corner of an L or U, bolted from underneath. That construction is the escape hatch: a swollen straight run can often be unbolted and replaced on its own, leaving the return untouched. A standard top is 600 mm deep and priced by the metre, the same shape as the CBT140-style benchtop line on coded schedules, which is why a 2.4 m section lands as a repair-scale spend.

Two catches. The new section has to match the old in decor, thickness and edge profile, and an older top may be discontinued on all three counts, so take a sample or the sink cut-out offcut when you go matching. Re-seal the join properly on assembly as well, because joins are what failed on plenty of these tops in the first place. When does the whole benchtop have to go?

Some tops are past saving, and the tells are consistent. Swelling that runs right around the sink rim and is spreading on both sides means the core around the cut-out is saturated and the sink is now sitting in soft board. A laminate skin that is lifting or bubbling off the core has lost its glue line, and nothing re-sticks it flat at scale. And if the top sags between cabinets, the board has gone soft right through.

Black staining in the core is the hard stop. That is mould living in material you cannot dry or treat, and sealing it in is not a plan. At that point the question changes from repair method to replacement scope, and chips, burns and the repair-or-replace line walks the same decision for the other ways tops die. Prevention that costs almost nothing

Every swollen top starts as a seal that nobody renewed. The silicone around the sink rim has a working life of a few years, and re-doing it is a twenty-minute job with a $15 tube, the same discipline covered in resealing silicone at the splashback junction. Wipe standing water off the join before it gets a chance to sit, hang the wet tea towel somewhere other than over the join, and let the dishwasher finish venting before the door gets opened against the front edge.

First 48 hours: stop the water, pull the kick and cupboard contents, get air moving, and resist all clamps. Once the board is genuinely dry, read it against the table above and pick the cheapest branch that solves your actual case, which for most people is the stabilise repair or a one-section swap.
