A dishcloth left wet against the upstand overnight. The puddle under the dish rack that never quite dries. A slow weep at the tap base that nobody reports for a year. Laminate handles all of it for a while, and then it doesn't.
Laminate is chipboard wearing a hard coat. The surface itself is tough, but every cutout and every edge is a way in, and the sink cutout is the worst of them: a raw board edge sitting millimetres from the wettest place in the house. Once water finds it, the board swells, the surface lifts and the top is finished.
