There are two common variants. Compact 540 mm appliances turn up in older flats and some tight galleys, and 900 mm freestanding cookers serve people who want a wide oven and more elements without going built-in. Both follow the same logic: the gap matches the nominal size, the appliance runs a few millimetres under it, and the cabinets either side are ordinary base units. In a small L-shape the gap usually lands mid-run with bench both sides, the way the 3.0 m by 2.4 m worked example places it.

Junctions, levels and the 900 mm line

A freestanding stove looks built-in when three small details line up, and parked when they do not. First, height. The stove stands on adjustable feet, and the target is the same 900 mm finished bench height the cabinets hit with their 150 mm kick, 720 mm carcass and benchtop. Level the stove to the benchtop either side and a pot slides across the junction; leave it 10 mm low and the kitchen never quite looks finished.

Second, the benchtop ends. The top either side of the gap finishes with a raw cut unless someone specifies otherwise, so those edges get end profiles or panels that can live beside heat and the occasional splash. Third, the floor. The stove sits on the floor itself, not on the kick, so if new vinyl or tiles go in after the kitchen, the stove rises with them and the cabinets do not. Run the flooring under the stove position, or tell the installer so the feet can take up the difference. Scribes and packers exist for exactly this kind of reconciliation between joinery and an honest old floor.

The rangehood over it

A 600 mm stove takes a 600 mm hood above it, sized to cover the elements, with the 600 mm splashback zone between benchtop and the cabinetry line giving the working clearance. Duct it outside if the building gives you any way to do so; a recirculating hood filters grease but returns the steam to the room, which in an Auckland winter is exactly what the house does not need. When built-in earns its premium

Built-in cooking is not a con; it is a set of real benefits at a real price. A wall oven at eye height spares your back, which matters more at 70 than at 35, and it is the standard answer in accessible design. A separate cooktop opens up 900 mm widths and induction options the freestanding market covers less well. And a tower plus cooktop reads as more considered joinery, which owner-occupiers renovating for the long haul often want.

The price of those benefits is structural, not just retail. The tower consumes about 600 mm of run that would otherwise be bench and cupboards. The cooktop needs a cut-out, which adds fabrication and gives a laminate top its most common failure point. And in twelve years when the oven dies, the replacement has to match the hole, where a freestanding stove just needs the same 600 mm gap the last one had.

The landlord's case for freestanding

Rental kitchens live a harder life than owner-occupied ones, and the stove cops the worst of it. When a tenant reports a dead oven on a Tuesday, a freestanding replacement can be delivered, levelled and connected the same week without a joiner ever visiting.
