The bin in most Auckland kitchens lives under the sink, hooked to the back of the door on a plastic bracket, ducking the waste trap every time the door swings. A 450 mm base is the compromise module. It takes two 15 to 20 L bins comfortably, or three slim bins if you want three streams in one drawer at the cost of each stream filling faster. Recycling only clears fortnightly, so a pair of 15 L bins is usually full before collection day and someone is walking bags out to the wheelie bin midweek. Fine if the wheelie bin sits by the back door, a daily annoyance if it lives down the side of the house.

So the station does not need three equal bins. It needs two big ones and one small sealed one. Emptying it every day or two beats letting a week of scraps ripen inside a cabinet.

Where should the bin drawer go?

Between the sink and the dishwasher. That position wins because of the sequence you run after every meal: scrape the plate over the bin, rinse at the sink, load the dishwasher. With the station in that gap the whole cycle happens inside one step, the plate travelling over benchtop, not floor.

The common mistake is putting the bins in the island across the aisle because a 600 mm module happened to be spare there. Now every scrape crosses a 1,000 to 1,200 mm walkway and every drip lands on the floor between. Forty scrapes a week, times fifty-two. The second mistake is banishing bins to the far end of the run, which parks the most-used drawer in the least-used corner. Under-sink bins: the honest assessment

The cupboard under the sink is the worst cabinet in the kitchen for storage, because the waste trap, tap tails and usually the dishwasher plumbing all land there. A door-hung bin has to be small enough to swing past the trap, which caps it around bucket size, and the bag lift happens through a forest of pipework.

Two situations still justify one. In a short galley where every base cabinet is committed, a door-hung bin beats a freestanding bin blocking the aisle. And as a home for a small sealed food-scraps caddy it is workable. As the main station it fails on capacity, on the lift, and on hygiene, since a splitting bag in the wet cabinet is how a cabinet floor ends up swollen.

Runners rated for the load

Weigh your two fullest bins on the bathroom scales before you pick hardware, add a few kilos for the pull-out frame and the door on the front, and spec the runner load class above that number, then test the close with both bins full. Loaded, this is comfortably the heaviest drawer in the kitchen, and it cycles more often than anything else in the house. Light-duty side runners, fine on a cutlery drawer, sag and rattle inside a year of it.

Make them soft-close, side-mount or undermount, and full-extension so the back of both bins is reachable without wrestling. Soft-close is not a luxury on this drawer. A slammed bin drawer splashes and shakes its contents, and the damping also protects the runner from the hip-shove it gets a dozen times a day. Smell control that actually works

Smell is a food-scraps problem first, so solve it at the caddy. A sealed lid, emptied every day or two into the kerbside bin, removes most kitchen odour at the source. Wash the caddy under the outside tap when you empty it; thirty seconds with a hose beats any deodoriser.

For the main drawer the choice is a sealed cavity or a vented one, and both work if you commit. A tight-closing drawer with lidded bins contains odour between empties. A vented cavity, with airflow slots at the back, avoids the trapped-air staleness a sealed cavity can develop, at the cost of more smell in the room when something ripe goes in. Our default is lidded bins in a standard unvented drawer, plus a hard rule that meat scraps and nappies go straight outside. If the household generates serious cardboard volume, give the overflow a shelf in the pantry rather than forcing it into the drawer, a planning point from walk-in pantry design and organisation.

Retrofitting a bin drawer into an existing 600 base

You do not need a new kitchen for this. If the carcass is sound, a standard 600 mm hinged base converts to a bin drawer in an afternoon with a bought pull-out unit. The order of operations runs like this.

  • Empty the cabinet, unclip the door from its 35 mm cup hinges, unscrew the hinge plates from the cabinet sides, and lift out any mid shelf.
  • Check the cabinet floor. If it is swollen or soft from an old leak, stop and deal with that first; new hardware on a compromised floor is wasted money.
  • Fit the pull-out frame to its template: runners level, square to the front edge, screws driven firm into sound board. If a hole is stripped, plug it with a glued hardwood dowel and redrill a pilot.
  • Fix the old door to the frame as a drawer front using the unit's brackets. The old hinge cup holes end up facing inward where nobody sees them.
  • Load the bins, then check the soft-close engages with the drawer full. A damper that closes an empty drawer sweetly can stall against nine kilos of Tuesday.

Where it goes wrong is usually step three: runners fixed slightly out of level, so the loaded drawer runs downhill and either slams or never quite closes. Take the extra five minutes with a level.
