That morning is what a developer is actually buying with a volume rate. Not cheaper board, not thinner margins, but repetition engineered on purpose. The same machines, set once, fed the same parts for hours. It is also fragile. One mid-run variation, one lot in a different colour, and the floor goes back to deciding.

Why does unit 30 cost less than unit 3?

Because most of the cost of a made-to-measure kitchen is setup and decision time: programming the cut, setting the edgebander for a decor, loading the boring patterns for hinges and runners, checking the first part against the drawing. On a one-off, every one of those setups serves a single kitchen. Across a batched run, the same setups serve the whole run, so their cost per kitchen falls with every repeat.

Error risk falls the same way. The tenth identical sink base is cut, edged and bored by a process that has already proven itself nine times that day. Volume discounts follow that curve honestly: a few per cent at five kitchens, more past twenty. The discount is the setup cost leaving the price, unit by unit, which is why it only exists while the units genuinely repeat.

One kitchen type per production run

A type is stricter than a layout. Two kitchens are the same type when the runs, the cabinet widths in millimetres, the decor, the benchtop and the hardware are identical, so one set of drawings and one cut program describes both. Production then moves through the package one type at a time. All eight type A kitchens are cut, edged, bored and assembled as one run, then the floor changes over once and runs type B. Site order can differ from build order; the programme reconciles them, which is one reason the 20-unit delivery timeline is built backwards from the install sequence.

Nested cut sheets and one setup per decor

Nesting is the software packing every part of the run onto standard sheets so the saw cuts the whole type in one program. Eight identical kitchens nested together waste less board than eight kitchens nested separately, because repeating parts tile efficiently, and the offcut from unit 12's panel becomes unit 14's shelf inside the same program. Each part comes off the saw with a label: type, unit, cabinet position. The label is what keeps eighty identical-looking white panels from becoming a sorting exercise.

The edgebander is the other setup that batching protects. Changing decor means changing the coil, purging the glue line, running test edges: minutes each time, and minutes multiplied by every changeover a mixed schedule forces. One decor per run means the 2 mm edging goes on at line speed all morning. Hardware kitted per kitchen, in labelled crates

At the end of the line, hardware does not travel loose. Each kitchen's fittings are counted into one crate: the 35 mm clip-on hinges, the runners, the childproof catches for the defined cupboards, the cutlery insert, handles, fixings, the adjustable feet. The crate is labelled with the address and type, and it travels with that kitchen's flat-packed or assembled carcasses. Kitting is rate protection dressed as tidiness. An installer who is short two hinges at unit 9 stops, drives, and loses an hour; a crate packed against a checklist in the workshop catches the shortage at a bench, before it ever reaches site. Unit 1 is the gate

Before a run rates, unit 1 of the type is built complete: carcasses, doors, benchtop, hardware, the lot. It gets checked against the shop drawings and, ideally, walked by the builder or client rep, because a drawing approval and a physical kitchen are agreed to by different parts of the brain. Hinge boring, edge quality, catch positions, drawer action, the exact white of the decor in daylight: all of it is cheap to change at unit 1 and multiplies from unit 2 onward.

The gate is also a schedule device. Once unit 1 is signed, the spec is frozen in physical form, and every later 'could we just' has to argue with an approved object. What breaks batching

Three requests do most of the damage, and none of them looks expensive when it is asked for.

  • Mixed decors: a second colour means edgebander changeovers, split board orders and doubled offcut stock for the life of the programme.

A workshop week is a fixed number of machine hours; the only question is how many of them produce parts.
